About Poppa J

Papa J • Country Soul Storyteller & Veteran Songwriter/Actor

Papa J is a soulful country songwriter and actor whose life has been as compelling as the music he creates. Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, Papa J’s journey in the arts began amid the rich cultural tapestry of his hometown, where he first picked up a pen and learned to express life’s raw emotions through song.

After relocating to Nashville, Tennessee, Papa J sharpened his craft alongside legendary songwriter Otis Blackwell, whose work helped shape the sound of early rock & roll with classics like “Fever,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “Don’t Be Cruel,” and “Return to Sender.”

Papa J’s creative path is deeply rooted in resilience. After serving 15 years in the U.S. military, including deployment during the Vietnam War, he returned home a veteran and cancer survivor, bringing to his art a depth only lived experience can give. He also made history as one of the first Black actors to work in Korea, where he starred in the film The Return of the Lost Five Fingers.

His long-awaited debut album, Papa J: Still Alive, showcases ten phenomenal songs that reflect a lifetime of stories — from heartache and hope to faith and redemption. With rich country-soul influences, Papa J’s music resonates with authenticity and an old-souled wisdom that bridges generations.

More than an artist, Papa J is a testament to endurance — a musician whose songs carry the grit of his past, the passion of his heart, and the soul of a life fully lived.
